Restylane (Dermal Filler) is probably the most exciting
nonsurgical advancement in facial rejuvenation to date.
It is a popular treatment for wrinkles and facial lines. The
procedure helps to 'fill out' and smooth away troublesome
nose to mouth grooves, forehead lines, frown furrows,
lipstick lines, acne pits and crows feet. And it's natural.
A key to the health and appearance of your skin is a
substance called hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide, or natural sugar, that
is found largely in the skin. Its primary function is to
provide volume and liability to the skin. The unique
characteristic of hyaluronic acid is its ability to bind with
water up to 1000 times its volume. This property makes it
ideal as a filler agent, for even while hyaluronic acid filler
is being naturally degraded it continues to attract more
water to it. This characteristic allows it to hold its shape
even longer.

This occurs naturally in our bodies where it plays an
important role in hydrating our skin and keeping it firm,
supple and looking healthy. As we age, our skin cells lose
their ability to produce this all important substance,
making our skin drier, thinner and lacking in volume. Skin
that can so easily give away your age.

What are the side effects?
The most common side effect is mild swelling. This can be
occasionally more marked and settles in most case a few
minutes after treatment. Occasionally patients can bruise
and roughly 2 in every hundred patients get bruising that
takes a few days to settle. An ice pack or frozen peas
wrapped in a tea towel are very helpful in preventing this.
The main things to avoid are excessive alcohol, Vitamin E,
St Johns Wort, Aspirin or Ibuprofen etc a few days before
treatment.

A touch-up treatment 2-3 weeks after the initial
treatment may be necessary to achieve an optimal
correction and duration. The treatments will last six to
eight months.
