HYPERHYDROSIS
OR EXCESSIVE
SWEATING
Sweating
is necessary to control body temperature during
times
of exercise in hot surroundings. In some individuals,
this natural
process of perspiration is more than normal
on the face, armpits,
head and hands. In rare cases the
whole body gets affected.
This excessive perspiration is
known as Hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is a condition in
which the sympathetic nervous
system does not shuts off
the sweat reflex properly.
Hyperhydrosis
is not dangerous in any way to the health.
Although
this type of profuse sweating doesn't has any
life-threatening
consequences but people who suffer with
Hyperhidrosis are
reluctant to share a hug, to dance, to
play cards, to get close.
Even something as simple as a
handshake can be embarrassing.
A
simple and effective treatment for excessive sweating
involves
a few injections (Botulinum toxin) botox into the
skin where the
sweating is greatest to block the action of
nerves that supply
the sweat glands, and stop the glands
from producing sweat.
Excessive
Sweating Treatment FAQ's
How
do Botulinum toxin injections work for underarm
sweating?
Botulinum toxin is a bacterial protein which blocks the
neuromuscular transmission
of messages from nerves
to
sweat
glands in the injected area. Thus, it stops the
gland from
performing its normal function, namely sweat
production
what
the procedure like?
BOTOX is injected into the armpits, blocking the action
of nerves
that supply the eccrine (sweat) glands and
stopping the glands
from producing sweat.
How
Often do I have to have the treatment?
Treatment totally blocks the nerve ending for about 6-12
weeks
but new nerve endings eventually start to form,
resulting in
the effects of treatment wearing off and
another course of
injections is needed.
Can
I have this Treatment in my doctor's practice?
The injections are only available in a few NHS hospitals;
the
procedure is mostly done in private hospitals or clinics.
The
procedures are classified as medical treatments and
are
therefore exempt from VAT.
